The Barbadian singer, 30, was photographed by acclaimed fashion photographer Nick Knight and styled by editor-in-chief Edward Enninful

She sports pencil-thin eyebrows and a floral headpiece for the colourful cover, titled “The Big Fashion Issue”.

It marks Enninful’s first September issue – widely regarded as the most important edition of the year – since he was named Alexandra Shulman’s replacement last year.

Rihanna is the first black woman to front the September fashion issue in the magazine’s history.

“I always knew it had to be Rihanna,” Enninful writes in the editor’s letter.

“A fearless music-industry icon and businesswoman, when it comes to that potent mix of fashion and celebrity, nobody does it quite like her.”

Rihanna, who is widely recognised as a pop icon of today’s music, tweeted that she was “so honoured” to be on Enninful’s first September cover.

“I finally got to work with Nick Knight for the first time! Legend. @edward_enninful get yours on Aug. 3!” she wrote.

Rihanna, who is an actress and businesswoman as well as a singer, wears bright orange gloves, a fuchsia pink mesh collar and a floral headdress on the cover.
